Fisher will receive a five year, $25 million contract.

The New York Knicks have hired Derek Fisher to be their next head coach, according to multiple sources. Fisher, 39, will receive a five-year, $25 million contract to coach the team.

Fisher has maintained a strong relationship with Phil Jackson since their time in Los Angeles. While lacking coaching experience, his on-court leadership and understanding of Jackson’s philosophy are thought to translate well.

Fisher joins a list of recent former players who have been hired without previous coaching experience. Earlier this season, the Warriors hired Steve Kerr after the Knicks expressed interest. Last season, the Brooklyn Nets hired Jason Kidd, who took the Nets to the playoffs in his first season. Previously, Mark Jackson, Doc Rivers, and Larry Bird took over teams without previous coaching experience.
