The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went out west and gave tribute to Al Davis by losing to the 49ers in same fashion they lost to the Raiders back in 1999; a 45-0 loss.
The game got out of hand early as Josh Freeman made some bad throws that were picked off, one returned for a TD. The Bucs answered the first TD but had to settle for a FG. It went downhill from there.
Freeman had some nice pass completions, but it was 21-3 before you knew it.
Clearly, this team has suffered the effects of not only a short week, but a road trip to California too.
Hope is not lost however, the Bucs have suffered some humiliating defeats at time, even during great seasons.
1997- Trent Dilfer goes 2 for 15 and 38 yards passing, 2 INTs for touchdowns as NY Jets beat Bucs 31-0.
1999- Down 24-0 in 3rd qtr, all starters came out. Result? 45-0 loss, worst in franchise History. Well…
2001- The Bucs played their last NFC Central division game; 27-3 loss to Chicago Bears in Chicago.
2005- Chris Simms falls victim to a 28-0 loss to the New England Patriots.
1981- Bucs lost to Denver at home 24-7, and lost in playoffs 38-0 at Dallas Cowboys
1979- Needing a win to clinch the division, Doug Williams throws INT after INT as Bucs lose at San Francisco 23-7.
Its not the first bad loss, and it wont be the last. The Bucs regroup and return home to play the Saints, who have blown them out two years in a row when playing in Tampa.
Of course the Bucs have lost a couple other by big scores in San Francisco;
1990 Bucs 7 at SF 31
1994 Bucs 16 at SF 41
And Credit needs to go out to HC Jim Harbaugh and his staff who have really turned the 49ers around. The niner Defense played impressive, knew what the Bucs were doing, and were physical. The Bucs clearly were not ready to play football today on the west coast.
