Cadillac Williams was the last upper level draft pick the Bucs have taken a running back at in a very long time. That was 7 years ago now, and Cadillac Williams is long gone to the St. Louis Rams as semi damaged goods. Last year it was obvious the Bucs could not keep Cadillac as a full time feature Back.
The truth is, 2005 was the only year he fulfilled that roll, and half of that year was lost. LeGarrette Blount has potential to be the full time feature back. Remember, Blount has spent 0 days in a Bucs OTA program in the offseason. This past year there was no offseason, and last season Blount was added late as the Bucs stole him off Tennessee’s practice squad.
Learning to pass protect in blitz protection, and learning how to hit holes will come to Blount; Cadillac Williams is a perfect example of that. Williams was often sat on 3rd downs so Michael Pittman could pass protect. That roll fell to Williams who excelled at it when he left.Right now, there is only one back on the Bucs who is a legitamate runner in the NFL, and that is Blount.
Lumpkin will not play again, one look at Josh Freeman’s stare at left after Lumpkin couldn’t pass block a play Freeman would have hit K2 for a first down. Earnest Graham is done for the season, and that makes 4 seasons in a row now?
His nickname “insurance Graham” is not supposed to mean you need to have GOOD insurance ON him!
People are wondering why Josh Freeman is struggling…the Bucs offense is predicated on a strong running game, because Josh Freeman needs time to pin point his targets, and most of the long TD passes are based on Play action fakes. The Bucs HAVE NO RUNNING GAME, therefore, Josh Freeman is going to struggle.
So start paying attention to your College Football teams playing now, because next year’s No.1 draft pick will start like this…
“Tampa Bay selects, running back out of…..”
