Ordinarily I start by describing the Division I poll, but this week I’m gonna first discuss the D-II poll.
After one of their most difficult seasons in recent memory (meaning: they’ve lost a whopping three matches), five-time defending national champions Concordia-St. Paul are back on top of the mountain. They fell as low as sixth in the nation in the 10/1 poll, but as of today, they’re #1 again. Defeating the incumbent #1, in straight sets, on their home court, will do that for a team. For their part, former #1 Southwest Minnesota State falls all the way to….oh, #2. They’re actually in a tie for that spot with Nebraska-Kearney, with both teams receiving a single first-place vote. There’s also a tie for fifth, involving Minneota-Duluth and BYU-Hawaii, who now have two first-place votes. I….I don’t know. It defies understanding. My Western Washington Vikings move up two slots to #15, thanks in part to another difficult week for the Indianapolis Greyhounds. In two weeks, they’ve slipped from #10 to #19. Ouch!

The reason I didn’t start with D-I is precious little changed. Stanford is still the unanimous #1. The top nine remain the same in composition and, except for UCLA and Washington trading places at #5 and #6, in order as last week. Minnesota takes a tumble after their two losses last week, falling from #10 to #14. There’s a new team in the rankings, as Miami rejoins the poll at the expense of Pepperdine. Very little changed other than that.
