Josh Johnson for Freeman wasn’t a bad idea, but the play call stunk!

I’ve been on record many times for saying a play call is a play call. Its a good play call if it works, and a bad play call if it doesnt work. I realize now that is true only 90% of the time. Like Gary Shelton pointed out in his article today, you cant use that logic if you call using a Gaurd to run a double-reverse.

But there were two parts to the Josh Johnson for Josh Freeman debacle that bear witnessing- 1) The idea to do it at all, and 2) the play that was run.
Take a look at the play, then we will discuss it.

I actually dont have as much problem with the personel grouping. Its a trick play, I get it. But the No.2 part was the play they called! THERE WAS NO TRICK!! Josh Johnson did the same thing he did twice this year! He ran around the end!!

Do you not think the Saints looked at game film and saw when Josh Johnson comes in the game hes going to run the ball? During the whole play I kept thinking to myself “They are not just going to run this…he’s getting ready to throw the ball right? They are going to trick them right?”

There was no trick. There was no treat. A trick play is supposed to trick the other team, not play right into what they thought was going to happed!
