Weekends

Weekends were made for Volleyball! Whether it’s playing the game, or watching the game, or watching your children play the game, or writing about the game, weekends were definitely made for Volleyball. And this weekend motif leads to the song of the day – “Just the Way You Are” by Billy Joel.

“I wouldn’t leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I’ll take the bad times
I’ll take you just the way you are.”

On the Local Front (St. Louis)

Girl’s high school Volleyball has entered the playoff stage here in Missouri, and probably in most other states as well.  Always some exciting Volleyball here!

Boy’s select Volleyball – Ages 15 through 18 – is also under way here in the Gateway Region of USA Volleyball.  This time marks the start of the select season which will conclude sometime around the  4th of July in the Boys Junior National Tournaments.

The Pirates of Park University (Parkville, MO) defeated the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis, MO) in four sets by a score of 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, and 25-23.  Missouri Baptist simply was not able to “get going” in the first two sets and provided little challenge to the second ranked Pirates.  The Spartans found their game during intermission, however, and took the third set 25-23 before dropping the fourth set and the match.  Missouri Baptist is 28 – 2 overall and 7 – 1 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC).  Park remains undefeated at 29 – 0 overall and 9 – 0 in the AMC.

Nationally

The Sooners of Oklahoma University swept the second ranked Longhorns of Texas by a score of 26-24, 26-24, and 26-24. It looks like Coach Santiago Restrepo (note the St. Louis connection for Santiago) had the Sooners ready to play.

Stanford (#1) defeated UCLA on Friday 10/24 25-20, 30-28, 20-25, and 27-25.

Stanford also defeated USC on Sunday 10/26 23-35, 25-22, 25-20, and 25-19.  This victory moved the Cardinal to 20 – 0 for the season, tied for their best start ever.

A relatively quiet weekend for Volleyball, then.  I hope you enjoyed the sport somehow. Until tomorrow, then!

And, let’s grow Volleyball together.
