Canada is a great country, known for hockey, the Rockies, Canadian whiskey, Toronto, Quebec City, Alberta, Ontario, wide open territory, beautiful skies, spectacular sunsets and the Mounties (RCMP), who always get their man. Tonight I’m going to write once again about Canadian Volleyball and the stellar level of men’s Volleyball played in Canada. The Rockies, beautiful skies, and spectacular sunsets remind me of a song named “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” by Canada’s preeminent songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot.
“There was a time in this fair land when the railroad did not run
When the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the sun
Long before the white man and long before the wheel
When the green dark forest was too silent to be real
But time has no beginnings and history has no bounds
As to this verdant country they came from all around
They sailed upon her waterways and they walked the forests tall
Built the mines, the mills and the factories for the good of us all”
That music still gives me shivers every time I hear it. I love that song almost as much as I love Volleyball!
As we know, there are two components to Canadian men’s Volleyball – the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sports for universities or large schools) and the CCAA (Canadian College Athletic Association for colleges or small schools). Each division is a separate, distinct entity with its own championship tournament.
The Golden Bears of the University of Alberta continue to roll in the CIS competition. Alberta will venture south to play exhibition matches against USC and UCLA. These matches will provide an excellent benchmark of the relative strength of the CIS compared to the MPSF specifically and US Men’s College Volleyball in general.
In CCAA play, the Kings of Red Deer College and the Rattlers of Medicine Hat College currently lead the pack. Both schools play in the extremely competitive Alberta College Athletic Conference (ACAC), which has three of the top six teams in the CCAA. Medicine Hat and Lethbridge College will travel south to Phoenix, Arizona in early January to play Division I school Grand Canyon University. These two matches should also provide a gauge of the relative strength of Canadian Volleyball compared to the American game.
Relevant match information, tournament information, and just plain old stats follow below. Hope you enjoy the all this material.
And please, let’s grow Volleyball together! See ya tomorrow.
