Much like the Bucs new Head Coach, the idea of old vs new will go a long way in the decision. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are starting out their Head Coaching search by interviewing Mike Sherman, and also Jerry Grey, who as an african-american minority fulfills the Bucs requirement towards the Rooney rule, which requires all NFL teams who are searching for head coaches to at least interview one african-american candidate.
Grey does very little to excite me for a coaching hire, and honestly, I’d take Jerry Gray over Mike Sherman any day of the week. I detest and loathe the idea of recycling and hiring a retread head coach. History has shown that just as winning a lottery is rare, so too is a head coach who finds success the second time around. Look at the 2011 NFL Playoffs and you’ll find head coaches who were never head coaches before.
Now the Bucs MAY have gone too far in their last coach who lacked a lot of experience, and it’s quite possible Morris may have worked out had he gone to Denver where he did not know his players. Maybe the situation with the failure of the Raheem Morris experience, has the Glazers thinking the Bucs fans need to see an experienced coach at the helm. That recipe will only work for one year, because if Mike Sherman and all his experience goes 4-12 too, Bucs fans will still be apathetic.
Bucs fans want to see MONEY being invested in the team, before Bucs fans will invest THEIR money in the team. Bucs fans are tired of hearing about how the Bucs are the least spending team in the league over the past 5 years. That is far more important that the coach the Bucs hire being an older man as opposed to some of normal age. Going too young is not the answer for this franchise right now who has had a bad experience, but going to an older guy is just trying to compensate. Instead just make sure your coaching candidate has 4 or 5 years of experience as an Offensive or Defensive (Or Special Teams! Hello…Rich Bisaccia???) coordinator.
No, you dont need to go from Coordinator to Head Coach, but for this franchise and this fan base, after whats happened with Morris, that probably wont be the best move. But the Glazers need to be bold, and get a good guy here. A leader, a leader of men. A teacher and organizer, and then let HIM hire his coaching staff, not Mark Dominik. In fact, Mark Dominik is the guy who put Kregg Lumpkin on the field and said he was good. He also found a lot of gems late in the draft or undrafted, so thats his talent, and thats fine. But the new HC needs to have his say in talent too.
Checks and Balances; it works in our govornment, it will work with the Bucs too.
Because everyone will have to be on the same page to figure out which Bucs to cut loose and which need to stay around and get a second chance.
