Youre hearing rumours and spectulation and thats all it is right now. Free Agency starts at 4pm today but because negotiations have been taking place for the last week some of what you hear is real. While I have no inside knowledge I am pretty good after 32 years of following the Bucs at figuring out thats real and not.
So here goes…well grade out this weekend!
DARRELLE REVIS- He is as good as gone. Bucs will free up 16 million dollars in salary. The Bucs could keep Revis if he agreed to come down in Salary….but he is Revis after all. The Bucs are trying to trade him and if they are not asking too much they should be able to do that. If the Bucs release Revis they get their #3 pick back but lose the #4 round instead. Id be willing to bet they are trying to recoup some picks this year; one of the deepest drafts in a decade where a 3rd round pick could turn out to be a starter for a decade to come too. WHY? Because truth is Revis is great…but this team is not ready to compete for the Super Bowl. Lovie Smith was brought in to turn this team into the 1997-2002 Bucs. every year you had no doubt the Bucs were going to have a winning season..it was just a Q of how far they would get in the playoffs. Youth and great picks in the draft with some good free agents right now to help this team progress forward are whats needed…not one shut down corner. Verdict? Gone within 30 hours.
DONALD PENN- His option is simple. The Bucs are asking him to renegotiate. He is making too much money. The Bucs want to keep him but they know Demar Dotson is ready to take over Left Tackle and probably dominate there. If Penn takes less money he will be back. If he doesnt move (on money) he will (move) off the team. WHY? Penn is good when he wants to be good. Why did he fall off last year (allowing 11 sacks)? Who knows. Rubbed wrong by Schiano like the other players on the team? VERDICT? 50/50 probably stays to compete.
MICHAEL KOENEN- Bucs could clear about 3 million. The only thing Im hearing about the Bucs getting rid of their kicker is from local media. WHY? Koenen prevents any opponent from returning a KO for a TD. VERDICT; Stays
MICHAEL JOHNSON Bengals- Bucs are going after edge rusher similar to Simeon Rice. Expect him to be announced as a Buc today some time. UPDATE – As of 11 am Deal is done for MJ 8 million a year. Bucs have a bonafide Double Digit Sacker on the edge. Which edge though.
Charles Tillman- Expect Peanut to be announced as a Buc sometime today no later than 4pm tomorrow maybe even before Revis is released/traded to increase pressure on #24.
Josh Mckown- Im not excited about going after a perennial backup QB who isnt even the best QB in his family as far as Im concerned. But Lovie wants him which makes me think he wants a Veteran QB to GROOM his young stud QB. ANd that is NOT Mike Glennon. If Bucs sign McKown that tells me pick #7 is going to be a QB.
ALEX MACK C- The Browns have the right to match any offer which is currently at 10 million a year. If the Bucs wont give Revis 16 million I dont see them giving Mack 12. The Bucs will go with Zuttah for the time being at Center and feel that curring coaching staff will coach up Z better than previous staff.
SURPRISE CALL- I have a feeling BUcs will go after Ben Tate the TE with Houston. Keep an eye out for another DL.
