Fact: The Bucs spent every one of their draft picks on the offensive side of the football.
Observation: The NFL needs to go back to 12 rounds in the draft.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers showed the world their new look uniforms
but they may as well have announced the team as the 1997 Bucs, or 2000, or 2005, pick a year; good defense, offense leaves a lot to be desired.
Head Coach Lovie Smith says its not as bad…and before taking it up with the whole offensive line, he needs to see the video to see.
I can tell you what he’s going to see; He’s going to see Jeremy Zuttah laughing somewhere, having drinks with Donald Penn as they have a laugh and say something to the likes of “And they thought we were bad”
Of course Lovie is correct, he knows its 4 preseason games, and everyone heard and saw Oniel Cousins stink it up in camp. Named the starter, coaches can now see exactly what he can do against NFL opposition. Or rather, what he cannot do (Block).
Another concern was QB Josh McCown, whom were told has had a switch turned on in his head. If I didn’t know better that the Bucs changed uniforms, I could have sworn I saw a Cardinals jersey on him. McCown let go a pass while under pressure that was so ill advised, the ill advice said to Josh “Don’t throw me”.
He didn’t listen.
In the end no harm was done. No one was lost for the season, and Josh McCown can get up and play another day. Saturday would be good! Tomorrow would be better for us fans, who watched Mike Glennon look far more polished. There is plenty of time to make amends. The preseason audience is very forgiving, until the 3rd preseason game comes and the same mistakes are made.
Not all was bad for the Bucs, well except the Defense. The D was plain old BAD! As in Bad..to the bone. Gerald McCoy looks every bit the part of Warren Sapp now, he is almost unstoppable. Da’quan Bowers may have saved his career and stock, and Adrian Clayborn too. Bowers has moved inside to back up Gerald McCoy and he had two tackles for a loss and a near INT.
Jacksonville passed for 180 yards along with 82 rushing yards. Most of the night the defense just looked like its going to make Bucs fans proud.
Not all was bad on offense, RB Charles Sims looked like the real deal catching the ball out of the back field, It’s going to be amazing if Lovie can find a way to get Mike James, Bobby Rainey and starter Doug Martin all involved in the running game.
Next week the Bucs host the Miami Dolphins, which is ironic because the most talk on social media last night was about the Bucs reaching out to former Dolphin Richie Incognito for Offensive Line help. Most in the know agreed it’s doubtful Lovie Smith would be interested after the events of last season.
BOTTOM LINE: You don’t need me to tell you what you saw; the Bucs defense looks like its going to be right back to where it was in the late 90s and early 2000s. The fact the its going to be done mostly with Greg Schiano’s players tells us how poor of a coach the last guy was. Bucs were flying to the ball, it was like watching football in the late 90s early 2000s.
The offensive line needs work. Oniel Cousins cannot start in the NFL. Hopefully the rookie Kadeem Edwards can improve, if not GM Jason Licht is going to be working overtime scouring the waiver wire when teams make their first cuts. Remember, thats how Donald Penn was found.
Speed is everywhere with the Bucs impact players, RBs and WR, but Josh McCown needs to bounce back from a night that looked more like his career and less like last year. And you don’t need me to tell you that is NOT a good thing.
Disregard above statement if you are a card carrying member of the Glennon Mob. 🙂
NOTE: If you get a chance, watch the game and follow along on twitter, following JoeBucsFan and 620WDAE’s TKras (Tom Krasniqi) and Big Dog Steve Duemig. Very funny stuff last night! Some samples….
Oh my……#Bucs guard play is abysmal so far. Downright hideous
