With Mike Glennon, lets not anoint, nor condemn, just yet

The Mike Glennon Mob have had quite the roller coaster ride this year: He won 4 games last year and had some good numbers, then he gets demoted to a career backup in the offseason, now after 2.5 horrible exhibitions by starter Josh McCown, Glennon has come in and won a game for Tampa Bay.

Now lets take a close look at what he did, what he REALLY DID. You see if the Bucs defense does NOT hold Pittsburgh on their final drive, Glennon does NOT get a chance to make up for 3 bad throws into the end zone to try and win the game.

He didn’t put enough air under one ball, too much on the second, and it was 45% Vincent Jackson’s fault on the other, to make a long story short, it was a nice effort in the 2nd half but where was this in the first 30 minutes?

  • – Following the fumble recovery, QB Mike Glennon – making his first start of the season – threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to WR Mike Evans. The touchdown reception was the first of Evans’ career and the touchdown pass was Glennon’s first of the year.
  • – Glennon threw his second touchdown of the day with seven seconds remaining in the game, connecting with WR Vincent Jackson from five yards out, giving the Buccaneers a 27-24 victory.
  • – Glennon finished the game with 302 yards passing, a career-high. Glennon is the first Buccaneers passer to eclipse 300 yards since Josh Freeman in 2012 (vs. St. Louis, 12/23/12)

What Glennon did against Pittsburgh is almost as important as what he did not do. He did not look like a rattled rookie and throw the ball into a crowd to get picked off like McCown did twice vs Carolina. There was definite heat on the balls thrown by Glennon, some spicy mustard if you will!

But the most important thing we saw from Glennon yesterday is leadership. The Offensive line blocked a little better for Glennon than McCown against Atlanta, and it happened again in the second half last Sunday. Pittsburgh doesn’t lose at home, and if they do, its to Cincinnati, or Baltimore, or New England. Not to Tampa Bay…not ever. Bucs fans in 2006 who had to endure Steeler terrible towels at Raymond James Stadium while black n gold fans celebrated, well this one was for you! There was nothing better than listening to silence of an away stadium, the PA announcer audible as clear as day.

The win over the Steelers ranks up there with a 1993 victory on the road at Denver when Sam Wyche coached Craig Erickson and Dave Moore upset John Elway and Co. 17-10 in December of 1993. But that was a bad Bucs team looking for something, anything, to improve themselves.

Sound Familiar?

Looking forward:

QB Mike Glennon: In his only career game against the Saints, went 22-for-41 passing for 219 yards and 2 touchdowns with 1 interception (12/29/13).

But lets look at this game with a level head; and not anoint Glennon as the franchise  Savior just yet. Yet there are 12 games left in the year, almost what Glennon QBed last year. At the same time, the if’s and whats didn’t happen, and the Bucs DID win and DID shock the NFL world, and Mike Glennon deserves the chance to continue to start.

After all, he’s got a mob on his side right?
