Since the NFL/AFL Merger in 1970, there have been an impressive amount of QBs drafted in the 3rd round who had a reasonable measure of success in the NFL, some more than others. But all of these QBs were able to take their teams to the playoffs and/or win a playoff game too!
This doesn’t guarantee Mike Glennon will become a good QB, it just means you don’t always get your playoff QB in the first round.
- Russell Wilson
- Nick Foles
- Matt Shaub
- Chris Simms
- Brian Griese
- Neil O’Donnell
- Chris Chandler
- Frank Reich
- Jay Schroeder
- Jeff Hostetler
- Joe Montana
- Danny White
- Joe Ferguson
- Dan Fouts
- Lynn Dickey
- Ken Anderson
Of course Josh McCown was a 3rd round draft pick too, so not sure what that says!
Everyone knows Tom Brady was a 6th round pick, well these QBs were taken even later than the 3rd round.
Joe Theismann 4th Super Bowl winner for Redskins
Brian Sipe 13th Part of the Cardiac Kids from early 80s Cleveland
Steve DeBerg 10th Former Buc, Bronco, took Chiefs to playoffs
Vince Ferragamo 4th Led Rams to SuperBowl in ’79
Eric Hipple 4th Solid QB led Lions to playoffs in early mid 80s
Rich Gannon 4th Led powerful Jon Gruden Raider offenses
Stan Humphries 6th Led San Diego to SuperBowl
Brad Johnson 9th Led powerful offenses in Minnesota, Washington and won a SuperBowl with the Bucs.
Trent Green 8th QB Journeyman famously led to Kurt Warner’s monster season after getting injured in preseason.
Kurt Warner Undrafted See Trent Green above! TWO SuperBowls with Rams and Cardinals.
Matt Hasselbeck 6th Led Seattle to their first SuperBowl
So this is no vote for Mike Glennon, in coming up with this list we passed up at least three to four times as many QBs who never amounted to anything. But its also safe to say there are some QB stars who were drafted in the first round, and a great many names have to be passed by in that round who were busts and never became anything.
So all this is to show is, Its very possible to find a playoff leading QB who can take you to and win you a Super Bowl in the 3rd round, or even later.
