Bucs hope competition at nickel corner will help the position

The Bucs have added a new old young bear to the mix, signing Isaiah Frye who played for Coach Lovie Smith as a rookie in Smiths last year with the Bears; 2012. He will be added to the mix with Kieth Tandy, who replaced Leonard Johnson last week midway in the game after season long poor performance at the position.

In Lovie Smiths version of the Tampa Two, the Nickel Back has his own coach, it is a unique position like Tailback, Fullback, or Corner and Safety.

Leonard Johnson was the uncontested starter this season, unchallenged in camp, until finally change had to be made. The results have been terrible.

No, this is not the answer to  cure all of the Bucs defensive ills, that can’t be done until you see SACKS rise, pressure from the defensive line is THE NUMBER ONE most critical thing needed in a T2 defense. And that is bad too.

After 6 games and 190 snaps, Johnson hasn’t picked off a single pass, and opposing wide receivers have caught 16 of 19 passes thrown his way, according to ProFootball focus.

Lets be honest, like I said, this isn’t going to cure everything, but its just another example of a player who went without competition at his position. Too many times that has happened this season, and there is no excuse for it when you’ve committed over 200 roster moves. When fans are debating if Mike Glennon should not have had a chance to win the starting job which he seems to have now, for the moment, why weren’t other spots up for grabs?
