The news came out today, via Adam Schefter of ESPN, that Pierre Thomas has a torn tendon in his ankle and not a “sprained ankle”. Nevermind the fact that a sprained ankle basically means damage to tendons in your foot. There are varying degrees of seriousness when it comes to an injury like that, and Thomas obviously suffered the worst kind. That should come as hardly a surprise to anyone, considering he’s been out for 7 weeks and that he’s taking longer to heal than Reggie Bush, who suffered a broken leg. I know it sounds bad, but trust me, it doesn’t change much from what we already knew. As long as this was taking, it was basically a given. The general term would still be a “severely sprained ankle”. Tendons in the ankle are either strained, partially torn, or completely torn, and the damage to the said tendon dictates how bad the “ankle sprain” is. So this “breaking news” is really no news at all, in that it’s essentially confirming that Pierre Thomas has a really really bad ankle sprain. The fact that he finished the game he was playing after he initially suffered the injury was probably not the best move in hindsight. I can only imagine he made whatever damage he suffered much worse.
I still think the quotes that he’s made “significant progress” are true, and it was confirmed he was running and cutting at practice this week. My best guess? He’s out for sure against Dallas, and he’ll be back the following week. Don’t quote me on it, but that’s my prediction.
