Saints Nation: The New Orleans Saints 2011 Draft Class

Saints Nation: The New Orleans Saints 2011 Draft ClassI present to you the New Orleans Saints’ 2011 draft class below, with their twitter pages linked to their names:

1. Cameron Jordan, DE, Cal

1. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

3. Martez Wilson, LB, Illinois

3. Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville

7. Greg Romeus, DE, Pitt

7. Nate Bussey, OLB, Illinois

So how would I grade this year’s class?

For the first time since I’ve been blogging on the Saints, I’ve giving them an A. They walked away with 3 players that I believe have starting quality ability in Jordan, Ingram and Wilson. I also particularly like the Romeus pick, someone who seems like a great kid and if he can just stay healthy he will help the team. I’m less in love with the Patrick and Bussey selections, but both guys stand a good chance of making the team and helping the Saints’ depth. Considering where they were picking especially, the Saints really got tremendous value out of their picks. I applaud Mickey Loomis and Rick Reiprish as always for conducting this excercise well and having it down to a science.

I can’t wait to see these guys on the field. The Saints just got a lot better over the weekend and that’s a pretty scary thought. The Saints used 5 of their 6 picks on defense, and 4 on defensive end/outside linebacker. I think it seems fairly clear which area of their team they had targeted to improve in the draft. Don’t forget they also sign DT Shaun Rogers prior to the draft, so the front 7 was clearly the biggest need all along.
