Saints Nation: Saints Re-Sign David Thomas and DT Aubrayo Franklin

Saints Nation: Saints Re-Sign David Thomas and DT Aubrayo FranklinWell I’ve been calling, hell begging, for the Saints to add depth at defensive tackle and they answered by plea by adding DT Aubrayo Franklin to the mix. Franklin is in his 9th year at 30 years old and he’s played for both the Ravens and 49ers. He’s known as an effective run stuffer that helps plug up the middle and he’s an extremely valuable addition to the Saints’ very thin interior defense. He’s signed a 1 year deal with the team and I think this pick up can be labelled as a “coup” because there was lots of interest on the open market for him.

As much if not more crucial is the re-signing of tight end Dave Thomas who will immediately assume his role as the primary backup to Jimmy Graham and also significantly bolster the Saints’ depth at that position. Those are two big pickups for the Saints as their shortened offseason continues to be a raging success. I’m starting to lose count but I believe that puts the roster at 96, so now 6 players will be peaced in short order.

****UPDATE**** Saints have released CB Josh Gatlin and G Carl Johnson so far.
