Saints Nation: Will Smith to Remain with Saints!

Saints Nation: Will Smith to Remain with Saints!A restructured deal is being done today that will keep Will Smith as a member of the New Orleans Saints. Apparently, this move will reportedly save the Saints between $5 and $6 million worth of cap space. This is huge news because the Saints remain far apart in contract talks with Brees and Peter King of Sports Illustrated has theorized they are approximately $3-$4 million apart. This cap relief could help finalize the Brees deal, and help the Saints offer more money to both Carl Nicks and Marques Colston in attempts to retain them. Most importantly…

it keeps their best defensive lineman on the roster at a much more manageable and reasonable cap figure. You’ll remember that I wrote this would need to happen for Will Smith to stay with the Saints, and it looks like it is. I don’t know what Smith is giving up, if anything, but good on him for helping the Saints in this cap situation. As if we needed any more evidence that the guy is a total team player. I really hope he never plays for another team and ends his career as a Saint. That’s more and more rare these days to see a guy retire after playing his entire career with one team, but Will Smith has been a special part of the team and I’d want nothing more than to see that happen with him. Hopefully he’s got another good 3-4 years left in him.

Preseason news: It’s now been made official, the Saints will play the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame game as they are present to watch Willie Roaf get inducted. The date is Sunday, August 5th at 8pm (EST) and it will be televised nationally on the NFL Network.
