With Robert Meachem no longer on the roster the Saints drafted in the 4th round to help shoulder the burden of his loss. Nick Toon, son of former Jets WR and NFL great Al Toon, is the newest member of the Who Dat Nation. Toon exploded for 926 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns in his senior season at Wisconsin, emerging as Russell Wilson’s primary target. He’s a borderline 6’3″ player with a great receiver frame that has very good potential to be a solid NFL receiver.

Overview: “Size is the name of Toon’s game. The son of former New York Jets star Al Toon, Nick stands at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, and plays to that size. Toon might not run past many NFL defensive backs, but his overall awareness at the position, understanding of how to play to his strengths and effectiveness in the run game make him a solid prospect. He should be an NFL mainstay after being selected somewhere in the second round.”
Strengths: “Toon understands how to run strong routes, using his size to make a play on the ball and move the chains. Not only is he an excellent mid-range receiver, he also has shown the ability to gain position on defenders downfield and make deep ball plays. He is willing and definitely strong enough to be involved as a blocker in the run game. He is a red-zone threat at the next level and a go-to receiver on intermediate routes to pick up the first down.”
Weaknesses: “Toon is not the fastest receiver prospect, and it can show when he attempts to stretch the field. He has a tough time separating at his size and explosion. Ankle mobility is a small concern, as he occasionally labors at the top of routes.”
This guy doesn’t sound too disimilar to Marques Colston and Adrian Arrington, and if he has good hands, uses his body well, and runs good routes he’ll be successful with Drew Brees. I like the pick.
