It’s not a long term extension for Drew Brees, but we’ll take the Saints finally inking their drafted rookies. As of a few days ago, the Saints were the only team left in the NFL to not sign a single draft pick. That’s something the NFLPA actually cried foul play about. Since then, the Saints have quickly starting taking care of each player.
It started with their first pick of the draft, 3rd round selection Akiem Hicks, who signed a 4 year deal last Thursday. Since then, the Saints have taken care of 5th round pick CB Corey White and 7th round pick T Marcel Jones by signing both players to 4 year deals yesterday. That leaves WR Nick Toon and G Andrew Tiller as the only remaining players without contracts, and based on the pace of the last few it’s a safe assumption those will get taken care of in short order.
Nice to see these rookies finally under contract and officially with the team. The Saints did have the lowest allotted rookie pool financially in the NFL, so one has to wonder if that was part of the reason why the contracts were slow to get finalized.
In other news, it was announced yesterday that Sean Payton and his wife had filed for divorce. It’s been a brutal year for the Saints’ coach to say the least. Though I can’t say I am too surprised based on the rampant rumors I had heard continuously during his 6 year tenure in New Orleans. It was said that the original root of the decision of the family to move to Texas last year was based on marrital issues. Best of luck to coach moving on from what has been an awful 2012 for him.
