The Saints trimmed their roster down to the league mandated 75 today by releasing 15 players from their previous 90 man roster. The players are:
TE Jake Byrne
WR Marques Clark
T Hutch Eckerson
G Paul Fenaroli
C Brian Folkerts
WR Kevin Hardy
CB Kamaal McIlwain
DT Swanson Miller
WR Derek Moye
CB Cord Parks
DE Donavan Robinson
LB Aaron Tevis
S Johnny Thomas
DT Remi Ayodele
QB Luke McCown
The biggest surprise is Remi Ayodele. I had a feeling based on how far down the depth chart he was this could be coming, but I am a little surprised he didn’t at least last till final cuts. Ayodele was brought back to the Saints this offseason after being a starter on the 2009 Super Bowl Champion team. He had spent 2010 with the Minnesota Vikings. As two of my followers (Bill L. and skooks both) pointed out, the emergence of rookie DT Akiem Hicks has made him expendable. That’s a very good sign.
I predicted 10 of the 15 cuts correctly, with these 5 guys surviving that I had gone: TE Derek Schouman, DE Alex Daniels, T Aderrious Simmons, CB Nick Hixson, S Jerico Nelson. Those 5 are still longshots to be on the final 53 man roster.
