Ok this isn't an April Fool's joke, I promise. The Saints signed their backup quarterback and it'll be Luke McCown out of Louisiana Tech. Of course that doesn't rule out the team bringing in a young understudy or even a veteran, but at this point I picture McCown being the #2 this year with an undrafted quarterback likely being on the practice squad. That link above also confirms the signing of DE Kenyon Coleman which was originally rumored late last week.
The Saints know McCown well as he spent all of training camp and most of preseason with the team last year.
He performed pretty well in my opinion and looked about even with Chase Daniel, honestly. Statisically it may not show that, but he was decent going 9 of 16 in limited reps for 86 yards. I did feel he completely outperformed Sean Canfield, but the Saints elected to keep the youngster over McCown likely because he represented more of a project at the time. McCown threw the ball well in training camp, had pretty good command of the offense, and was limited by playing with mostly rookies. McCown was the backup of Matt Ryan last year as the Falcons picked him up once the Saints released him. I have zero doubt McCown was in part picked up to give the Falcons some intel on the Saints' offense, and now hopefully McCown can repay the favor and give the Saints some valuable information on their hated rival's offense. The 10 year veteran has 9 career touchdowns and 14 career interceptions.
Welcome back Luke! With Chase gone this will be a much bigger opportunity for you to land on the 53 man roster.
