Drew Brees was listed as #11 on the NFL Network's top 100 players yesterday, down from #2 in 2012 after a 7-9 season. The top 10 list hasn't been released yet, but we know Drew Brees is the lone Saint represented in the entire top 100 list. I know this drives you crazy but I also know this list rewards good players on teams that had successful seasons over elite players on teams that struggled. How else can you justify Vernon Davis being #38, Aaron Hernandez being #77, and Jimmy Graham being left out? Consider this: Jimmy Graham had 85 receptions, 982 yards and 9 touchdowns last season in what was considered a "down year" after the previous season putting together the second best season ever in league history for a tight end. Davis and Hernandez, COMBINED, had 92 receptions for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. That's right, the two of them put together are worthy of top 100 spots while Graham is not because they outperformed him (again, COMBINED) by 7 catches, 49 yards and 1 touchdown. Also consider that Tim Tebow was on this "top 100" list in 2012 despite barely being on a roster by the time the 2013 list came out.
To me the biggest farce of all, though, is having Brees at #11 when in my opinion he's in the discussion for one of the ten best players of all time in league history, forget now. Here are the facts:
at 33, he is 8th in NFL history in passing yards. By year's end, he'll easily be #5. He holds a Super Bowl title, a Super Bowl MVP, 7 Pro Bowls, the NFL record for passing yards in a season IN HISTORY, and the NFL record for highest completion percentage in a season IN HISTORY. Last year, in what was considered a "down year" where he dealt with having his offensive mastermind head coach suspended and the worst defense in NFL history, he led the entire league in passing yards (5,177 yards was best for 3rd ALL TIME) and touchdown passes. And for you effiency people out there, Brees' career QB rating is 7th best all time, ahead of Kurt Warner, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Brett Favre, John Elway and many others.
Excuse me while I never take this list seriously ever again.
