Saints Nation: Thoughts on Saints’ Roster Moves

NFL-Draft

You’ve undoubtedly heard of all the roster moves that took place to get the Saints at 75 by now. They had 80 going into the exercise and here’s how they trimmed down:

Waived were Eric Martin, Akwasi Owusu-Ansah and Tim Toone. On IR were Will Smith, Joe Morgan and Chris Chamberlain. The biggest surprise of all that was Martin getting waived, who looked very good early on in camp. The waive of Martin, an outside linebacker, does possibly suggest that Junior Galette and Martez Wilson could be on the mend? I also had no idea Chamberlain’s injury was serious, but spending the second straight season on IR prior to the regular season surely ends his tenure with the Saints. Victor Butler was also placed on the reserve PUP, which means he could return to the Saints at some point if he heals up. Most don’t think that’s reaslitic but we’ll keep an eye on his recovery.

That leaves 73, so the Saints also added OLB Parys Haralson by trade and picked up Bills’ CB Jumal Rolle off waivers. I’ve never seen Rolle play and know very little about him but he’s an undrafted rookie out of Catawba. I can’t imagine he had any shot at making the team unless he goes nuts on special teams Thursday. For what it’s worth, through three games in preseason Rolle is at +1.1 on PFF, with pretty favorable grades in coverage.

I have to admit I thought Eric Martin stood a good chance of making the team, but evidently he didn’t do enough on special teams to merit serious discussion amongst the coaching staff.
