There's a very cool and dangerous tool out there right now to help you pass time when bored called the Fanspeak On the Clock Mock NFL Draft Simulator. I could spend all day doing this and clearly the Saints shouldn't be using my advice on drafting because every time I get to the 4th round I can't pass on LSU running back Jeremy Hill. I've drafted 7 rounds for the Saints multiple times. Even in a mock situation I'm incapable of dismissing my homer tendencies. And while posting all my mock picks is a waste of your time, I figured you'd at least be interested by who was the best player available at #27 and #58 (the Saints' first two selections) in five simulations. So here were my results of five simulations:
1st simulation:
At #27 the best player available (BPA) was Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State. Naturally I selected him.
At #58 the BPA was Tre Mason, RB, Auburn. That was very tempting, but I went with Penn State WR Allen Robinson.
2nd simulation:
At #27 BPA was Justin Gilbert again. Just to be different I took Cyrus Kouandjio, T, Alabama.
At #58 the BPA was Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas. I went ahead and took him with Brian de la Puente in limbo.
3rd simulation (interesting to note Allen Robinson was drafted in the 1st round in this simulation):
At #27 BPA was Louis Nix III, NT, Notre Dame. He's the same type player as John Jenkins, so I went with S Calvin Pryor of Louisville this time (Kouandjio was available, though).
At #58 BPA was Tre Mason again. I went with Morgan Moses, T, Virginia.
4th simulation:
At #27 BPA was Missouri DE Kony Ealy. I went with him.
At #58 BPA was Swanson again. Allen Robinson was also available again so I took him.
5th simulation:
At #27BPA was Eric Ebron, TE, UNC. I'm assuming we'll retain Jimmy Graham so I took Jason Verrett, CB, TCU.
At #58 GPA was Tre Mason again. I took Jarvis Landry, WR, LSU.
Notes:
On my Saints "big board", LSU WR Odell Beckham Jr was often gone, surprisingly, by 27 despite being ranked 34th overall.
The highest rated player on the simulator to fall to the Saints in 5 tries was Eric Ebron (#14 overall)
All the top rated tackles (Matthews, Robinson, Lewan, Martin) were all gone in each simulation by 27. Kouandjio was available on a few of them.
