How long does Rob Ryan have to “right the ship”?

In an effort to stick with nautical references, clearly the ship has steered significantly off course. The ship is of course the Saints defense, led by defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. I don’t think any of us saw this coming. How could an offseason that saw aging players that barely contributed leave in tandem with the arrival of Jairus Byrd turn a 4th ranked defense into the 31st ranked defense? Rob Ryan is fortunate to have survived that debacle, but how long does he get to survive it?

I put together this piece on This Given Sunday and I asked the question how long Rob Ryan would remain in New Orleans? And the topic is interesting enough that I wanted to bring it over here as well. Is Dennis Allen just here to help, or is the writing on the wall with Ryan? If the writing is on the wall, why not just give the reins to Allen now and move on from Ryan?

My opinion is Ryan will be given maybe as little as 4-8 games to turn things around. If the Saints defense is still terrible, we could see a midseason move to Allen. If things go well, Ryan may be out at the end of the year either way with Allen on board. Or if he really pulls another all world turnaround from a previous horrible season, could Rob Ryan get a new contract with the Saints (even with Allen waiting in the wings)? Your thoughts?
