There’s a very cool and dangerous tool out there right now to help you pass time when bored called the Fanspeak On the Clock Mock NFL Draft Simulator. I could spend all day doing this and clearly the Saints shouldn’t be using my advice on drafting because of my propensity to take LSU players. Or maybe they should since I drafted Jarvis Landry and Jeremy Hill for them on this simulator all the time last year. Even in a mock situation I’m incapable of dismissing my homer tendencies. And while posting all my mock picks is a waste of your time I still did it and I figured you’d at least be interested by who was the best player available at #13 and #44 (the Saints’ first two selections) in five simulations. So here were my results of five simulations:
Simulation #1:
Best player available (BPA) at 13 (using Fanspeak rankings here) was T Brandon Scherff of Iowa. I went with CB Trae Waynes of Michigan State. At least for now Waynes is widely viewed as the best corner in the draft.
BPA at 44 was RB Duke Johnson of Miami. I went with his teammate ILB Denzel Perryman.
My 7 round picks: 1. CB Trae Waynes, Michigan State, 2. ILB Denzel Perryman, Miami, 3. DT Ellis McCarthy, UCLA, 4. G John Miller, Louisville, 5. T Rob Havenstein, Wisconsin, 6. CB Quandre Diggs, Texas, 7. RB Malcolm Agnew, Southern Illinois
Simulation #2:
BPA at 13 (using DraftTV rankings) was La’El Collins of LSU. I could have taken Waynes again or Vic Beasley who I’m a big fan of, but I took Collins this time.
BPA at 44 was RB Todd Gurley of Georgia. After going offense in round 1 against my better judgment, there was no way I could ignore defense with this pick. I went with Perryman again.
My 7 round picks: 1. T La’El Collins, LSU, 2. ILB Denzel Perryman, Miami, 3. DT Jordan Phillips, Oklahoma, 4. CB Alex Carter, Stanford, 5. DE Preston Smith, Mississippi State, 6. DE Danielle Hunter, LSU, 7. OLB J. R. Tavai, USC
Simulation #3:
BPA at 13 (using Composite rankings) was Scherff again. I went with DT Danny Shelton of Washington.
BPA at 44 was Gurley again. I went with QB Brett Hundley of UCLA, even though I don’t want a quarterback out of this draft. Just mixing it up
My 7 round picks:
1. DT Danny Shelton, Washington, 2. QB Brett Hundley, UCLA, 3. CB Quinten Rollins, Miami (Ohio), 4. CB Lorenzo Doss, Tulane, 5. T Rob Havenstein, Wisconsin, 6. Taiwan Jones, Michigan State, 7. DE Jermauria Rasco, LSU
Simulation #4:
BPA at 13 (using Optimum Scouting) was DE Alvin “Buddy” Dupree of Kentucky. He was ranked higher for Optimum Scouting than the other rankings, but I went with him.
BPA at 44 was RB Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin. I highly doubt he would fall to 44 but the guy is way too good to pass up on. And with Ingram in limbo this may turn out to be a need anyway.
My 7 rounds:
1. DE Alvin Dupree, Kentucky, 2. RB Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin, 3. OLB Kwon Alexander, LSU, 4. CB Lorenzo Doss, Tulane, 5. OLB Geneo Grissom, Oklahoma, 6. T Kevin Whimpey, Utah State, 7. ILB A. J. Tarpley, Stanford
Simulation #5:
BPA at 13 (using Scott Carasik of Bleacher Report) was Dupree again. This time I took Vic Beasley.
BPA at 44 was Gurley again. I took Oregon CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu.
My 7 rounds:
1. OLB Vic Beasley, Clemson, 2. CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Oregon, 3. ILB Jake Ryan, Michigan, 4. T Corey Robinson, South Carolina, 5. RB T. J. Yeldon, Alabama, 6. CB Nick Marshall, Auburn, 7. G Adam Shead, Oklahoma
So I’m curious, which of these five simulations would you be most excited about as the Saints draft class right now?
