Blogger intel on C. J. Spiller and Dannell Ellerbe

Fortunately there is a Dolphins and Bills blog on the Bloguin Network so getting some very informed intel on the Saints two newest players was a direct message away. Many thanks to both for their content. I can’t promise the same comedy that I got on Max Unger but as you can see below I can offer good insight into players we don’t know much about. First I turned to Joe (@BuffaloWins) of Buffalo Wins for his thoughts on C. J. Spiller.

He said the following:

Spiller is pretty much the clone of Reggie Bush. He’s incredibly explosive and there are times where it looks like he’ll take it to the house on any given play. He’s very versatile in the run and passing game. His best year came in 2012 where his average YPC was the highest since like the 60s for a running back who had at least 150 carries. He’s an all-purpose back who if you get him in space, look out. In terms of weaknesses, he has a tendency to kick too many runs to the outside and at times picks the wrong hole. He also has durability issues. Don’t count on Spiller being an every down back who gets 20-25 touches per game. He also has issues with running out of a I formation or a 2TE offense. Best way to run Spiller is out of 3-4 WR sets. That’s where you get him in space. Another thing, he’s very inconsistent. All you have to do is look at his 2013 season and notice where is YPC for those games go. I believe he had like 6 games where he averaged over 5 yards per carry and then another 8 where it was less than 3 yards. Overall though, I don’t think he could have gone to a better situation. Payton knows how to use a guy like Spiller based on what he did with Bush and you guys have a few backs there, so it won’t be like he has to carry the load.

Asked about Spiller’s catching ability:

I’d say [his hands] are good for a RB. Most of CJ’s damage in the passing game came on screens. They didn’t really line him up too often split wide.

Then there’s the linebacker, Dannell Ellerbe, acquired in the Kenny Stills trade. For this one I reached out to Michael (@Phins_Phocus) at Phins Phocus. Michael shared the following:

Ellerbe never lived up to expectations in Miami. He was a big part of the Ravens 2012 Super Bowl run and got paid for it. He’s versatile, he played both middle linebacker (as a starter in 2013) and was moved to strong side linebacker in 2014. He had a decent 2013 season, but tackling was an issue. I don’t think he’s finished but it depends how he recovers from the hip injury.
