The Saints have been active in trading this offseason and this move had been theorized for some time. One day after spending time at the Florida State Pro Day, the Saints saw enough of Jameis Winston to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers an offer they couldn’t refuse. The Saints traded their 1st round picks in 2014 (13th and 31st overall) , a 5th round pick and defensive end Cam Jordan in exchange for the 1st overall pick as well as a 3rd round choice. I have to say, this feels steep for what will effectively be a backup quarterback in 2015.
Per a source, “Sean Payton has long considered the move and trade talks have transpired for months but the pro day was the last bit of confirmation he needed. He seems sold that Winston will be a star.” With this move the Saints will keep Drew Brees for one season to groom Winston and the Saints are expected to trade him in the 2016 offseason and officially hand over the reins to Winston. The Saints have not ruled out trading Brees during the season if Winston shows he is ready to play sooner. Before that happens, though, the Saints will need to officially select Winston 1st overall at the end of the month. By all accounts that is thought to be a foregone conclusion.
APRIL FOOL’S! This yearly tradition took a turn for the worst last year when I reported Jimmy Graham had been traded. A year later, it actually happened. So before you roll your eyes at the impossibility, you should worry that our crystal ball may predict the future yet again. I certainly hope not for the Saints’ sake. April 1st is Saints Nation’s birthday, our 6th! Many thanks to all of you who read and support this site. Sorry for the scare but most of you aren’t fooled by our yearly fake post anymore.
