Kyle Wilson is a former 1st round pick (29th overall) by the Jets in 2010. He’ll turn 28 in May, so he should have at least a couple years left and he’s a veteran who has plenty of experience in the league. In theory, that’s exactly the kind of player you want competing for a spot in the nickel and dime packages behind Keenan Lewis and Brandon Browner. As always, though, I like to ask my blogger friends for some intel on the newest Saint players. Fortunately for me when it comes to the Jets I have an easy resource that I’ve known for a while. Many thanks to my friends over One Jet at a Time for giving me the information. I recommend you look them up on twitter as well.
They had the following to say about Wilson:
We (
#JetsNation) absolutely love to hate him. If I @’d you with his name, the responses would be a dumpster fire. But on a serious note… he’s prone to pass interference calls because receivers often get behind him. Loves to ‘finger-wag’ when he gets lucky. Really not much good to say.
I can’t say I’m too surprised. This sounds like a lateral move from Corey White and possibly a downgrade from Patrick Robinson. Wilson graded 75th out of 108 qualifying cornerbacks on Pro Football Focus last year with a -4.6 overall grade. Keenan Lewis was 98th and Corey White was 106th. Patrick Robinson was 40th. When quarterbacks passed against Wilson they had a 111.9 rating for the year, though, which was worse than the rating against Lewis (97.9) or White (94.4). Wilson is by no means a ballhawk, either. He has 3 career picks and not a single one over his last 47 NFL games played. Yes, seriously. Since the season opener in 2012, he doesn’t have a single pick despite starting in 16 of those contests and being a reserve but active player in the others.
He is durable, having played in 16 games in each of his 5 seasons in the NFL. He hasn’t missed one game. So he has that going for him. Otherwise, this all adds up to me saying that you shouldn’t expect much at all from this guy. The team will be much better off if Brian Dixon and Stanley Jean-Baptiste improve enough to make Wilson a camp casualty. And of course that Delvin Breaux is the real deal. Let’s hope for that. If Wilson makes the team it’s probably a bad sign. Don’t get too excited.
