Mailbag: Twitter Questions

I feel like the overwhelming majority of you guys that read this website (and on twitter) always ask great questions. It makes for better conversation to have a high yield of intelligent Saints fans. So thanks for being you. I can’t imagine how mind numbing it is for the radio guys to take calls from some of the fans that just don’t have a clue. Thanks a bunch for your contributions. Some good stuff to get into, let’s dive in:

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsEvery player is different. I don’t like how many people are saying that Spencer = Champ Bailey or Olin Kreutz. How do they know? Butler had horrible luck with an ACL injury. He was going to be a starter before that injury and who knows how good he could have been? Spencer is a pretty versatile player, he can cover a little bit, he can definitely play the run, and he’s a pretty decent pass rusher. Butler was more of a pass down rusher that was developing his skillset. So Spencer is older, more experienced, more seasoned, and can do more. There’s really no comparison in terms of accomplishments on the field. Don’t forget Darren Sharper and Drew Brees came in with pretty huge question marks, and they ended up contributing on the field in an epic way. I’m not saying Spencer will be anything like that, his best years are behind him, but why can’t he be like Parys Haralson? He totally could be. But Spencer is coming off a decent season and he played his best football late in the year. So based on that I think the Saints are getting a guy that’s in a good place last year. It’s not like Bailey who came to the Saints broken off an injury riddled year. I don’t think Spencer will make a Pro Bowl or anything, but I think he’ll make the team, he’ll play, and he’ll contribute.

If the Saints go down a couple scores and go on one of the pass binge games where they abandon the run, definitely Spiller. But the Saints will try to commit to Ingram as much as they did last year. I think the Saints will have their regular rotation of those three including Khiry, and maybe even Tim Hightower (or a rookie) here and there. I think they’ll try lean on Ingram whenever they can, but if they go pass heavy or a 2 minute drill, it will always be Spiller.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsI really believe the Saints are going to take the best players available. Spencer, 2 corners and Spiller were added, in addition to Unger and Ellerbe, so they wouldn’t have to draft based on need. They filled the major holes in free agency. Now it’s just finding depth. If the right situation falls to them, they would consider it. I just think Winston and Mariota will be gone before 13 and there’s no other QB worthy of a 1st round grade. If Mariota falls to 13, someone will give up a decent about to get him, so I’d trade down. That scenario is highly unlikely, though. Hundley is round 2 (or 3) is not something we can rule out. I think there are scenarios where the value encourages Saints to make a move for a QB. Brees, McCown, Griffin is a good situation, though, so they definitely won’t force it. I give the Saints a 5% chance of drafting a QB in the first two rounds. They might have Hundley in their “cloud” in round 2 though if he’s available.

Honestly there’s a lot of guys at 13 i’d be psyched with. A LOT of talent out there. Shelton, Beasley, Cooper, La’El Collins, Scherff and even Waynes are all guys i’d be very happy with. My dream scenario is Beasley, though. Ralph is really captaining the La’El Collins train hard, though, and I’m starting to get on board. I think tackle depth is SO BAD for the Saints and Collins could start at guard so he helps in two ways. If a tackle goes down, he slides over there and you feel better about Lelito or Kelemete filling in at guard than you do about Bryce Harris at tackle. So Ralph is slowly turning me. But I’m rambling here without answering your fine question. I’ll say 13th – Beasley, 31st – Malcom Brown, 2nd round – Jalen Collins. DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE!

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsI get two questions from you? Man, you really do love me! I don’t think Graham is a great fit in Seattle. They’re a power running team. Is he even going to work in the lineup blocking? If the team struggles at all the fans are going to be A LOT less forgiving based on what they gave up. If Jimmy starts pulling his alligator arm, drops and mentally being checked out of games for a long period that could be an issue. The stuff he got away with in NOLA because we loved him so much won’t fly over there. I could see things not playing out that great for Jimmy out there. I really do wish him the best but Seattle is all about defense and running the ball. The Saints are all about passing. That’s a big style change for a receiving tight end. On the flip side if he stays healthy and helps Russell Wilson develop into the next Tom Brady we’ll regret shipping him out. But my gut reaction at first is the fit isn’t a slam dunk (see what I did there?).

Definitely going with Bennett. The minute Graham starts acting soft, and it will happen, I’m fully expecting a sideline shouting match which will immediately make Graham miss Drew Brees and New Orleans.
