Intel on Marcus Murphy from @DavidCMorrison

With all the new drafted players on board for the Black and Gold I took the time to reach out to some of the most knowledgeable fans, beat writers and bloggers for information on what to expect from the newest crop of talent. This time I caught up with David Morrison of the Columbia Daily Tribune. As you might have guessed, they cover Missouri football extensively and I knew David could tell us everything we need to know about the newest Saints running back that already reminds us all of Darren Sproles. In fact, once you read what David has to say, you’ll feel even stronger about that previously stated reminder.   Many thanks to David for this write up, and make sure you give him some love on twitter. Here is what he had to say about 7th round draft choice Marcus Murphy:

Marcus Murphy is a back who plays faster than he is because of his elusiveness and ability to make quick cuts. He made most of his living outside the tackles at Missouri, but he can run between the numbers as well on occasion. His biggest asset is his vision. He makes decisive choices when surveying the line for seams to hit, and hits them hard. That’s a big help in his return game as well, where his best returns came when he basically made one cut to free himself and got upfield. He holds Missouri’s program record in return touchdowns and finished second to Jeremy Maclin in all-purpose yards. So that’s pretty good company. His way onto the field will be on special teams or as a change of pace slot back. He’s not as good a back as former teammate Henry Josey, but he might have a better shot at sticking in the league because he’s got a more versatile game. But he’s always going to probably be and 8-10 touches per game guy at most, with a diversity over rushes, receptions and returns. He was fairly durable for his size. Never really had any injury issues after missing 2011 following shoulder surgery.

Based on this I think his chances of making the team are strong. You?
