Saturday was a day off so not a ton to report until later today at 4pm when the Saints return to practice. I did run into a number of players around grounds and was able to ask general questions, but there was nothing too notable. I will point out that John Jenkins looked to have his weight down which is a positive sign. He’s a very nice and approachable guy. I talked to new CB Travis Manning for a little bit and he was very excited to join the team. He knows the Saints are crowded at corner but he hopes the injuries that brought him in in the first place will give him an opportunity to show what he can do enough to sneak on the 53 man roster. I can also confirm that rookie DT Kaleb Eulls is a very big boy.
A lot of the bigger name veterans either returned to New Orleans for the day (Ben Watson and Drew Brees on Brees’ private jet) or went cart racing (David Hawthorne, Ryan Griffin, Mark Ingram and Austin Johnson). Austin Johnson, but the way, remains the nicest and most approachable player I’ve pretty much ever met on the Saints. If you ever see him don’t be shy to say hello, he’ll happily talk to you.
The temperatures were again very mild but I expect them to pick up a little bit at least for the 4pm practice. By no means will it come close to Metairie heat, though. This practice should be intense considering the Saints have had two of the last three days off. I didn’t notice any injuries in the scrimmage so hopefully the time to heal means a number of guys will return to practice.
Stay tuned for more and make sure to follow us on Twitter for live updates during the practice. I’ll be attending a picnic dinner with the players post practice so I’ll hopefully be able to hook you guys up with more insider tidbits.
