Like I’m pretty sure each and everyone one of you could attest to if I were writing these observations based on my first viewing of the Saints preseason game against the Ravens it wouldn’t be safe for the viewing of children. In fact if I were to jot down any of the comments I was making during that hellacious first quarter it would probably make George Carlin blush (RIP to the GOAT). Thankfully I forced myself to watch it again, and since I already knew what would bother me I found that I was far less emotional during the second viewing. I think that is fortunate because I discovered there was a LOT more I liked (or at least didn’t hate) about that game on the second viewing than on the first.
Without any further ado, and in no particular order here are my observations from the Saints first preseason game:
• David Hawthorne is on borrowed time. Hawthorne was the same player he has been since we signed him: invisible unless he’s messing up. Perhaps it’s just my bias towards him, but if Ellerbe is healthy I think he’s gone.
• Henry Coley has a shot to make this team. I liked a lot of what I saw from him, and we should all be keeping a much closer eye on him going forward.
• Tyeler Davison has the ability to play on this level… he doesn’t yet have the skill.
• Kaleb Eulls looked very good out there. It’s only game one, but he made a statement.
• Bobby Richardson might have looked better, but only situationally. His potential as an interior pass rusher seems to be legit. He made a couple of nice moves, I hope he can build on that and live up to his hype.
• I have said it before and I will say it again…Khiry Robinson is the total package. He looked FANTASTIC out there. I really hope he carries it into the regular season this year and forces them to give him more touches.
• Nick Toon is done. He showed nothing, did nothing, I give up (now watch him ball out the next 3 games).
• Seantavious Jones really is worthy of the name ‘stretch’. He made an excellent catch along the sideline that unfortunately didn’t count because the corner pushed him out, but still I guarantee the coaches saw that and liked it.
• Coleman didn’t do much, and also didn’t play much. No real analysis on him one way or another other right now.
• Jahri Evans was awful… I hope he is ok.
• Andrus Peat actually looked surprisingly (based on camp reports) good out there.
• Stephone Anthony is real. He only played a few snaps, but he looked comfortable and made a few very nice plays.
• Kikaha showed some great burst off the line, and was also atrocious in coverage. The tools are there, he now has 3 more weeks to learn how to utilize them best.
• Anthony Spencer was the most up and down player for me. He looked fantastic… between the whistles. Anthony got dinged twice for lining up in the neutral zone and that just can’t happen, better clean that up and fast.
