Josh Scobee was bad last year, that’s no secret. The former Louisiana Tech kicker who will be 34 this summer struggled making just 6 of 10 kicks in Pittsburgh, excluding a missed extra point, before getting cut. After that poor stint he came clean that the misses were due to a hip flexor and a pulled quad. The Saints recently worked him out, he claims to now be 100%, and the Saints saw enough of that work out to give him a 1 year contract. So hopefully he’s healthy, can stay that way, and regain the consistency that blessed his stellar 11 years in Jacksonville.
It’s not that Scobee didn’t have his bumps along the way with the Jaguars, too. He made under 80% of his kicks in his first two seasons, and only went 18-28 in 2009. There were some ugly years. Then there was the run from 2011 to 2013 where he went 71 of 78 (91%). At his best, Scobee was incredibly solid. He’s been an 8 time special teams player of the week and once made three 50+ yard kicks in one game, tying an NFL record.
We’ll see what the Saints get, but if he’s healthy you can’t rule out the possibility of an outstanding kicker with a very strong leg.
