SN BlogCast ep.12 We are negative, Evan Woodbery even more

Not a lot of news, few minor news things, none too good. We both see some stuff happening, then when Marijn is trying to give it a bit positive ending, Evan Woodbery comes along and features as a special guest. Not really… just read 🙂

Marijn Pessers (@Monedula_)

So Brian how about that Brandon Browner fellow?

Brian Bauer (@SaintBrian9)

This guy is opposite of a gift that keeps on giving … he’s like the unwelcome house guest who keeps coming back because he left something at your house. Browner posted some garbage on instagram about taking the Saints money and running, and of course, it got a nation of Saints fans all riled up again. The thing is … isn’t that what we’ve all been saying this whole time, and isn’t kinda weak on his part that as a professional football player, he’s admitting as much? Frankly I could care less what he’s got to say at this point, and my only wish is that he’s actually on the field in some kind of starting role when Seattle comes to town. The only positive regarding his remarks is it only proves what we figured, and we can move forward without any concerns as to whether we made the right move by releasing him. What’s your take Marijn?

I find it weird that he was hired because he was such a high character guy. Well we saw that when he was all up in his coach his face and Lyons Yellin (or however you write his name) also got to know that. Do not forget him taking out a blocker instead of the guy with the ball because the blocker told him something bad about his wife or whatever. The guy is human, but he has no character. Well, the character of an asshole. All is great as long as he is playing well but when he absolutely sucks the true guy comes out. He is just a little bit better then Galette. Galette was playing well and started being an asshole before he was playing bad.

Rob Ryan too had something to say this week. He however is a nice guy, he is just someone that does not do the smart thing. The smart thing would be to shut up and not say anything. He does not blame himself and blames others for shit that happens. Of course it was not easy for him, but when you break a gentlemen’s agreement not to to talk you are doing it wrong. Now you are seen as the guy with the big mouth who ran to his (slightly) older brother for help as soon as the Super Bowl winning coach did not want him around anymore. Of course now Payton is free to respond and has hard evidence of failed substitutions to back up his arguments. So kids, learn to shut up. Is that also being taught at the annual rookie symposium meeting? Maybe Marques ‘The quiet storm’ Colston should have a talk there instead of Cris ‘Fall guy’ Carter.

I gotta admit I was pretty dismayed at the Ryan interview as well. He tried to take the high road a few times and just couldn’t resist the bravado of the situation. Look, I get it, you and your brother are the league’s tough guys – the dynamic duo of big mouths, mediocre seasons. There were so many ways to go about taking blame while providing a bit of criticism in the Saints direction, he just missed the mark. Maybe they did bring in new guys like Byrd in an effort to mimic Seattle’s success, but any good coordinator would welcome a high talent guy like that and make it work. Seems to me had Byrd stayed healthy and the defense thrived, Ryan would be taking credit for that as well. The fact is the move failed, Ryan never adjusted and the defense fell flat. It happens. Pretty obvious though why Ryan has never been a head coach. Never will be either.

Let’s stay on the negative for a second before turning to the positive (Vincent Brown … that’s positive right?!). New Orleans losing the Super Bowl bid was flat out brutal – and I’m speaking not only from the city’s perspective but as a fan of the team as well. The two situations are tightly wed and I think this could be the first salvo in a decade-long bitchfest over building a new stadium. Let’s be honest – this was the last chance for the Superdome. The power outage a few years ago clearly turned off a number of owners who question whether the Superdome has the infrastructure to continue as a host, and with new stadiums coming online (starting with Atlanta, then to LA, and then perhaps Las Vegas or Oakland) it could be quite awhile indeed before the Big Easy is even in the debate again. And now that that’s happened, the saber rattling begins. Look – we got a reprieve when the Superdome was refurbed after Katrina, but it’s now one of the league’s older buildings. Do I think it personally needs to go? No, but then again I still can’t believe Atlanta is about to open it’s THIRD building since the Superdome was constructed. No superbowl means Benson and the boys, at a minimum, are discussing what to do next … and what to do next when it comes to owners is ALWAYS build a new building. Am I overreacting here Marijn?

I don’t know. I myself never saw the value in hosting the Super Bowl. It is nice to have but to me it is like the Pro Bowl. I see tweets coming by that is it now for an x number of years somewhere in.. Florida? Seriously, who the hell cares!? No home team has ever won de Super Bowl right? It would be a lot nicer to win the Superbowl in Atlanta. Have a homecoming every year when we play there. They would have to build a new stadium to get rid of that. Also, #sphincterbowl needs to trend. I think the Super Bowl is getting back to the Dome. If not, would you think the Dome would be demolished and a new one build? This stadium is an Icon especially what happened after Katrina. The only thing that is possible is to build a new and bigger stadium, get a Super Bowl, if you find a new purpose for the Superdome.

So Vincent Brown… Good question. Is that positive? Well any veteran competing is better then having an other rookie, but I think this guy is not an answer to anything. He is I believe no special teamer, not a guy who wants to prove himself. He has shown what he has got. So he would need to be #4 WR at least. Lets see his history… Started with a team, then bounced around the league and last year he came back to that same team. Kinda reminds me of a guy who also has a San Diego connection. Robert Meachem. So, basically in my view Brown is Meachem but then without ever having a year close to as successful as Meachems worse year. Nope I am still not positive. I pass.

BB

HAHAHA Marijn just negative Ned today! Value in the Super Bowl is to the city and the billions it brings to said city and it’s businesses. I’m not talking about this from a fan perspective (and you’re correct, no host has won … or even participated) but more from a city perspective. The latter drives the desire for a new building. I don’t think the dome would get trucked immediately, remaining potentially for concerts and tractor pulls … but NFL owners have tremendously short memories, and new is *always* better as far as they’re concerned.

As for Brown, I view him as a positive if only because a veteran receiver was a need a few of us had identified heading into OTAs. Does he last? I have no idea, and chances are probably not. But looking at the riff-raff he tried out with, he was clearly the darling of the bunch and could potentially have something left to give. Without him, Brandin Cooks is basically the senior man in that corps, and I don’t even know if Brandin Cooks is 24 yet so … let’s put it this way, I don’t see where it hurts the team.

Let’s finish this with a brief discussion the Saints most tormented position … Kicker. Two weeks ago the Saints signed Connor Barth. The move was interesting one, as the organization clearly felt Barth was a step up from Josh Scobee (Scobee was released in the transaction). To me … I mean, I like Barth. Fairly automatic from reasonable distance, nothing to write home about from considerable distance. As far as the Saints are concerned, they want to avoid considerable distance as often as possible and believe their offense capable of preventing that. But let’s be clear: He’s just a guy. There’s a reason why Kai Forbath is still here, and a reason why there’s likely going to be another kicking competition in preseason. Both are decent, if not limited, kickers. I think as Saints fans we all yearn for the days when we had the best kicker in the league; those days are gone folks. Kicker is going to be a forever revolving door, hopefully a guy like Barth fills it for awhile.

MP

Barth will be the kicker. The guy has had better consistency, knows what it is to play in the Super Dome and has a chip on his shoulder playing against his old team twice a year. He was not a bad kicker. Tampa basically just wanted a new guy and instead of making a smart decision with their 2nd rounder they drafted Aguayu (Ralphing the name her probably) him way too soon. When you draft a kicker in the 2nd round your other guy is toast. But I put it to you like this; Who would you rather have kick for you? The guy who was replaced by a UDFA that did not make the Saints team or the guy that was replaced the all time highest draft picks at his position?

It’s June. And I largely agree .. however … this is from today:
