Weekly MLS Recap – March 16, 2015

Welcome Back!

The first full week of MLS in 2015 has come and gone — and there was no shortage of season kickoff drama.  Two new franchises made their debut, disciplinary committee suspensions were appealed and already rejected, and everyone’s favorite* commentary duo of Alexi Lalas and Taylor Twellman made their divorce official, working opening weekend for separate networks.

*Definitely not everyone’s favorite.

Highs and Lows

Orlando Fills the Bowl: Despite the dubious marketing slogan, Orlando City SC entered the 2015 MLS season in full force, leveraging a passionate supporter’s base to fill the Citrus Bowl with over 60,000 fans for their inaugural match against New York City FC.

David Villa Turns Up at Yankee Stadium: After a quiet club debut in Orlando, NYCFC’s poster boy showed up in a big way this weekend in the Bronx. The captain led the new club to victory and delivered a memorable home opener for the crowd of more than 40,000.

Mix’s Poetic Side: Since his move stateside, Mix Diskerud has been flooding his Twitter feed with some strange but wonderful poetry.  While he doesn’t seem to have the full grasp of the syllabic rules of the haiku, Mix does deliver some insightful and topical observations.  Take this example from earlier in the month:

Yankee Stadium: A miss will count – as strike or ball

Europe: A Count will strike – a Miss at ball

MLS: Count strike off – w’ll miss no ball”

But what does it all mean, Mix?
