In what proved to be a high-flying battle and close game, for the first three quarters at least, the New Orleans Saints emerged victorious against the Detroit Lions with the final score of 45-28. Led by Drew Brees who had 466 passing yards and threw for three touchdowns, the New Orleans Saints offense showed once again why they have one of the most dangerous passing games in the NFL. Although Lions quarterback, Matthew Stafford, threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns, the Lions defense could not seem to find an answer late in the game to contain Brees and the Saints.
In the first half of the match-up, the Lions were able to put the first points on the board with an early touchdown pass four minutes into the game by Matthew Stafford to Will Heller. The Lions also seemed to have a handle on containing the Saints offense with key stops and turnovers including a controversial fumble recovery by the Lions that was originally blown dead by the officials preventing a seemingly easy Lions score. The Lions defense held the Saints to only 10 points in the first half, which led to the 14-10 lead at the half.
The second half proved to be all Saints football as the Saints led an opening touchdown drive and went on to score a touchdown in all five of their second half possessions. The Saints defense also held the Lions offense to two touchdowns, who unleashing their air attack and dangerous ground game led by Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles to seal the win and help New Orleans advance to the divisional round of the NFC Playoffs. The Saints continue their road to the Superbowl as they travel to San Francisco to battle Alex Smith and the 49ers.
