The Andre Villas-Boas sacking has led to a world of speculation over who will manage Chelsea and what went wrong? Andre Villas- Boas had Chelsea sitting in a lack luster 5th place. The team seemed to be under preforming with a lack of chemistry. It seemed as the team underperformed AVB was pleading to the higher-ups and the media for a nod of approval. He got nothing. The players didn’t give him much either Fernando Torres is nothing more than a punchline to bad joke. Juan Mata started off hot but the little Spaniard had his bouts of inconsistency and lack of support. Drogba who has been consistently ranked one of the better strikers has looked pedestrian at times. It is safe to say that AVB is a young manager who bit off more than he could chew with this job. It will be interesting to see where he will end up, back to Portugal or maybe another country?
It appears that everyone is expecting the man who won every trophy imaginable. The man known as “The Special One”. The one and only Jose Mourinho. Jose Mourinho has won 6 cups in three years as manager of Chelsea. The Portuguese manager has won the UEFA champions league cup twice once with Porto and the other with the Inter. He is the main man for the job seeing as he has done it before. Mourinho appears to be leaving Real Madrid after this season regardless he is on track to win the la Liga and other hardware. For Jose once the hardware has been won he moves to a new challenge. He has made it obvious throughout the year that he would be fine going back to England and even Chelsea.
Another manager whose name is being thrown in the fold is Rafa Banetiz, who is currently unemployed. Rafa had a good run as Liverpool’s manager from 2004- 2010. Rafa has seemed to have fallen off the face of the Earth. If Rafa ends up taking the job expect major clashes between manager and owner. Roman Abramovich is an intense human who wants things done his way. Rafa would not be a good fit at Stamford Bridge.
Barcelona Manager, Pep Guardiola’s name has been thrown out in the mix. Pep would be a good fit; he has proven to be a great coach and can manage the talent. But the again the owner is a big detraction and it’s hard to envision Pep going to Chelsea. Pep is a Barcelona man and it would be hard to see him on any other sideline, and not to mention this is the same Pep that says he wants to retire at the ripe old age of 45.
A pair of former English managers have been thrown into the fold with Fabio Capello and Sven Goran Eriksson. Sven will do anything to get his name out and has not been relevant for years. He is still a decent coach but it’s hard to see him being successful especially with many of his former players like Lampard and Cole. Fabio on the other hand just got fired as English manager and it’s hard to see him still coaching in England. Fabio would be a good fit; he’s high strung, theatrical and can deal with high profile players and egos.
One man who isn’t in the fold and probably should be is Quique Flores. The former Atleti manager had an impressive run as manager of Atletico Madrid. He showed that he can manage a big team and generate success. It would be great to see what a manager like Quique could do with the budget and talent that Chelsea possesses. It’s a long shot that probably won’t happen but I’d love to see Quique ditch Al-Ahli and return to the main stage.
