Today on Opening Day, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0. There was not much offense in today’s game, but Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay was masterful on the mound. In this game, Halladay threw eight innings, had five strikeouts, and only gave up two hits. Those two hits were given up in the first inning.
Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz had a good day as well going 3 for 3 with a RBI. His RBI came in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly and first baseman Ty Wigginton slid into home and scored. Finally you can’t look pass Pirates starting pitcher Erik Bedard, who had a good game as well and he threw seven innings, had four strikeouts, and only gave up one walk, six hits, and one earned run.
The Phillies next game is on Saturday night at 7:05, when Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee takes on Pirates starting pitcher Jeff Kartsens.
Final Stats: WP: (PHI) Roy Halladay 1-0 LP: (PIT) Erik Bedard 0-1 SV: (PHI) Jonathan Papelbon (1)
