In a game that had twice as many cards as it had shots on target, the Union were able to record a victory. The 1-0 victory over Columbus marked the Union’s first goal. Crew defender Eric Gehrig conceded a PK in the 38th minute, Freddy Adu whipped in a cross that bounced off the forearm off Gehrig.
Midfielder Gabriel Gomez pulled off a cheeky chip of the keeper while taking the PK. Gomez recorded the lone goal of the game. It’s the Panamanian’s second goal of the season and second off a set piece.
The talk of the game will be about the defense, who gave a herculean effort. They were dominating by being able to limit Columbus’s chances. Goalie Zac MacMath was able to make a number of key catches in traffic. MacMath was able to record his second straight shutout and it looks like his poor form earlier in the season is a distant memory.
It was a new defensive lineup with Danny Califf being a late scratch due to a hamstring injury. In replace of Danny Califf was rookie Ray Gaddis, who was arguably the most impressive player on the pitch. Gaddis’s first appearance was one to remember, he was able to completely lock it down at the left back position and often contributed by being a catalyst in attack.
