The Phillies came into tonight’s game with a record of 0-42 when trailing after eight innings but that all changed in one inning. The Phillies started off tonight’s game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers down 2-0 in the 1st inning. On the mound for the Phillies was Roy Halladay. The last time we saw Halladay, he pitched versus the Dodgers on a pitch count of 80 pitches. Tonight, his pitch count was between 80-100 pitches after having a shaky first inning but the Phillies’ offense picked up Halladay and tied the game up on back to back solo home runs coming off the bats of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.
As the game continued into the third and fourth innings, the Brewers would take the lead back on a Ryan Braun single and a huge three run home run by Carlos Gomez. Things started to look bleak for the fans, as the Phillies had a prime opportunity to get closer and tie the game up but they couldn’t, as the Phils scored only one run in the seventh inning on a pass ball to make the score 6-3 Brewers leading after seven. As the game approached the ninth inning, many Phillies fans wondered does this team has it left in them to pull out a comeback victory, things were looking bleak. The comeback started as Jimmy Rollins, Juan Pierre, and Chase Utley all got on base. Then Ryan “The Big Piece” Howard came up and hit a single to center field. Rollins and Pierre would score to make it Brewers 6 Phillies 5.
With Chase Utley on third base and Ryan Howard on first base, Carlos Ruiz, the Phillies MVP this season hit another single to center field to tie the game up at 6-6. Utley would go to score the tying run and Ryan Howard would move up to second base. Up next, Hunter Pence, who had a great at bat drew a walk to load the bases. To get more speed on third base to win the game, the Phillies would use backup catcher Erik Kratz as the pinch runner for Howard. Coming up to bat was Ty Wigginton and he would hit the game winning sac fly as Kratz scored the game winning run for the Phils.
The Phillies 7-6 win gives them a two game winning streak as well as two extra-inning wins in a row. Joe Savery would get his first win of the season as the Phillies bullpen stepped up and threw three shutout innings, only walked two Brewers hitters, and struck out five. Finally, it seemed like Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez had a relapse and pitched like he was back on the Mets as this was his fifth blown save of the season. Rodriguez would give up three hits, four earned runs, three walks and only get one strikeout.
The Phillies look to ride this new wave of winning into tomorrow night’s game. On the mound for the Brewers will be Zack Greinke (9-3, 3.57 ERA) and for the Phillies, Cliff Lee (1-6, 3.72 ERA).
