I wouldn’t put it past the guy, really. We all know how just angry he was all the damn time on the ice. He was like Dwayne Roloson, with that always seriously pissed off stare, except Roloson doesn’t act out violently half as much as Smith used to.
The NHL was a wild and crazy place back in the late 70s and early 80s. It really was the new wild west. Lots of horses, gun fights and crazy old prospectors. Somehow I can imagine Bobby Nystrom in the locker room after the game repeating the famous line from Anchorman; “Yeah, Billy I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by because you’re probably wanted for murder.” Anchorman wouldn’t come out for another 30 years or so, but hey, you don’t know it didn’t happen. YOU WEREN’T THERE. You may not have even… Been… Born. I just blew your mind, didn’t I?
