Phillies Acquire Michael Young

We all knew it could happen and it finally did this afternoon. The Philadelphia Phillies acquired third baseman Michael Young from the Texas Rangers for pitchers Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla.

Lindblom pitched in the majors and was apart of the Shane Victorino trade that sent Victorino to the Dodgers this past summer. Bonilla is apart of the Phillies minor league system and pitched for their single A affiliate the Williamsport Crosscutters.

For this trade to even happen Michael Young had to waive his no-trade rights and he finally did, which was a very tough decision for him. Young is 36 years old and he is signed through 2013. According to sources, the Rangers will pay more than $10 million of his $16 million contract. This works out very well for the Phillies, as they do not have to spend a lot of money for an adequate third baseman.

Last season with the Rangers, Young hit .277 with eight home runs and 77 RBIs. Remember the Phillies also have Kevin Frandsen at third who they also resigned over the off-season.

This move for Young seems to be a place holder for a season as minor league third baseman Cody Asche is getting ready to make his jump to the majors really soon.
