In the Nittany Lions last game of the season, they went out with a bang defeating the Wisconsin Badgers 24-21 in overtime. This game was pretty much back and forth for both teams until the fourth quarter where Penn State was down 14-13.
Penn State’s senior quarterback Matt McGloin found freshman tight end Jesse James for 41 yard touchdown pass on a fourth down to give the Nittany Lions a 21-14 lead. The Badgers would not die as senior quarterback Curt Phillips found junior wide receiver Jeff Duckworth for a four yard touchdown to tie the game up and to send the game into overtime. That would be Duckworth’s only catch of the day.
In overtime, the Nittany Lions would get a 37 yard field goal from Sam Ficken to take the lead 24-21. We remember early in the season when Ficken could not make a field goal in the Virginia game. Then on the Badgers possession, sophomore kicker Kyle French would shank a field goal and send Wisconsin home with a loss.
Penn State finished the season 8-4 and 6-2 in the Big Ten conference. The Nittany Lions will not be playing in any bowl games this season due to NCAA sanctions but it was great to see this team fight through adversity.
The Nittany Lions are on the road back to prominence in the College Football world as they have the right man in Bill O’Brien guiding them.
