Flyers Amnesty Possibilities

Flyers Amnesty Possibilities

I know it is a little early to be talking about this, but at the end of this season every team is awarded two amnesty clauses which in able teams to buy out two players of choice and not have their salaries count against the cap. For the Flyers, this will be an all season evaluation to see who are the odd men out. Unfortunately, the salary cap goes down from about 70 million a year to roughly 62 million a year and the Flyers are right at the top of the 70 million cap already. This means that the team next year will look a lot different than this team now. But who do they buy out? That is the question.

Obviously, guys like Giroux, Couturier, the Schenn brothers, and Voracek are safe. They don’t have high cap hits and they are the future in the Flyers organization. Other guys like Talbot, and Meszaros should be safe too because they won’t really demand much of an increase in salary when their current contracts are up.

The guy I think that will most likely be bought out after this year is Danny Briere. Briere is under contract until the 2015-2016 season, making 6.5 million per season, and he hasn’t really panned out lately as much as he should have. 6.5 million a year for a hockey contract is a big salary, and unfortunately Briere hasn’t been putting up the numbers to solidify himself as a big salary guy anymore. Believe me, Briere is one of my favorite players on the team, but it only makes sense to buy him out.
Another guy on the hot seat is Ilya Bryzgalov.  Bryz is under contract until the 2020-2021 season making 5.7 million per season. If he shows up this year and plays like a top 10 goalie, he stays. If he has another streaky year, he goes. Plain and simple. Their are other guys that could step in and be streaky for a lot less money than that. But I am faithful that Bryz will have a breakout year this season and stick around for more to come.
One guy that could possibly get the hook is Scott Hartnell. Hartnell is making 4.75 million until the 2019-2020 season. Hartnell is a great locker room guy, and a pretty good player, but because of the Flyers salary cap issue, he might be a guy who gets cut.
The Flyers are going to have a tricky off season this up coming off season. They have to get their salary down, along with getting a few more key pieces to the puzzle. I don’t think it will be long before the Flyers are the king of the Atlantic division again, but Mr. Holmgren needs to make some very smart business decisions before we get there.
