If you haven’t noticed there is one Phillies player missing in the outfield in spring training, that player is Delmon Young. The former Detroit Tigers outfielder signed an incentive based deal with the Phillies this past offseason. If you are wondering, Young had to lose weight to collect his $600,000 weigh in incentives. So far he has done that but he will still be out of the Phillies lineup until mid-April due to an ankle surgery that he is recovering from.
Today, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said to news reporters that Delmon Young will exclusively be playing right field when he does return.
The quirkiness about this is that Young has not played in right field since his days with the Tampa Bay Rays back in 2007. Amaro continued as he told David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News about Young is that “He’s not a good left fielder, and he doesn’t want to play there.”
When Young does return it is going to be interesting to see who the odd man out in the outfield is. So far Dom Brown and Laynce Nix have both been playing phenomenal baseball so far in spring training, while the youngster Darin Ruf has been struggling as of late.
