After a dismal 2011-12 season came to an end and as many brackets began to fill with the hopes of the 64 teams’ dreams of cutting down the nets began to manifest, Villanova began the long off-season of rebuilding a roster of dominance. A team that had no seniors or winning momentum for that matter was very hard to watch last season and at times left fans, students, and alumnus alike scratching their eyes out. You would think a team that finished 13-19 overall and 5-13 in conference play would have a similar following the next season.
So now we fast forward all the way to March 6th 2013 and take a look at the state of the team. Wow! is all you can say when you look at the comparison of the seasons. The Villanova Wildcats are back and the roar is mightier than ever. They have taken down three top five teams this season. They wrapped up the regular season in a big way, defeating Big East powerhouse Georgetown University by 10 points in a final score of 67-57. They also defeated then ranked number seven Syracuse and number five Louisville back in January in back to back games.
A team that was once a joke in the Big East last season, has got its swag back. Head Coach Jay Wright has to be without a doubt the top consideration for Big East Coach of the Year. His team had quite possibly the best turn around in recent history from season to season. His Wildcats finished this season with a record of 19-12 in the regular season and currently sit seventh in the conference. With the Big East tournament on the horizon in the coming days, it is truly time for the Wildcats to put any remaining doubters in their place. This squad is no longer complacent with lackluster play and is ready to make some noise in post season play.
Look out for them as a sleeper team in the upcoming tourneys in March. Top scorer JayVaughn Pinkston is the focal point of this team and has a knack for hitting big shots for the Wildcats. Like I said, this squad has the potential based off the play this season to make a quiet deep run. Bottom line the roar is back in Wildcat Nation!!
