Ever since Chip Kelly agreed to bring his high-flying and fast-paced style to Philadelphia, we have witnessed an off-season more exciting than any other. Following Kelly’s hiring, he has built what will be an interesting quarterback competition to take place this summer. While praising quarterback Nick Foles for his playing style, Kelly and the Eagles signed Michael Vick to a new one-year contract which includes the option for two more years following the 2013 season. In addition, Kelly brought in quarterback Dennis Dixon whom which he coached during his days at Oregon.
Now, the Eagles are turning their eyes towards a new possible target; quarterback Geno Smith. Smith, who is considered the top quarterback in the 2013 draft class, worked out for Coach Kelly and the Eagles on Monday in West Virginia. Last season, Geno Smith threw for over 4,000 yards and handed out an impressive 42 touchdowns with only 6 picks.
While many believe the Eagles will look to tune up their defense in this year’s draft, some may start to wonder what Kelly has in mind for the 4th overall pick in building his spread offense. It’s the spread offense that helped Michael Vick succeed in his better days with the Eagles and defines Kelly’s successful style of play. Many believe that Michael Vick will regain his starting job with the Birds but with five quarterbacks on currently on the roster and more to workout, he’ll have plenty of guys to go through.
