Prospect Watch

There hasn’t been many positive things to talk about this season for the Flyers, and because they have the next few days off, I am going to focus on someone that I believe is the best prospect coming out of the draft this season.  I know this seems a little premature, but let’s face it, its not looking too promising for the orange and black this season.

The young prospect that I would LOVE the Flyers to take with their 1st round draft pick this upcoming draft is not the same as many people want it to be.  Many people believe that the defenseman Seth Jones, who plays for Portland in the WHL, is the top prospect coming out of this draft class.  Jones can definitely play and he will be good in the NHL, but he is not the best in my opinion.  My choice out of everyone in this class is Jonathan Drouin, who plays for Halifax in the QMJHL.  Drouin is 5’11 and 185lbs of pure skill.  Not only does he have very gifted hands, but he is also someone that can put up massive amounts of points.  In his two seasons in the QMJHL, a total of 82 games, Drouin has 134 points (48 goals and 86 assist).  Just this season, however, he has 105 points in just 49 games.  That was no type-o either.  He is averaging 2.14 points per game, which is unheard of.

In most mock drafts, Drouin is a top five pick.  He sits atop the draft class with Seth Jones, Nathan MacKinnon, Aleksander Barkov, Darnell Nurse, and Valeri Nichushkin.  I understand that a draft with two defenseman (Jones and Nurse) being in the top five would seem like a perfect fit for a team who clearly needs a top defenseman in the organization, but Drouin is a player that if he is passed over, he will make you pay on the ice.

If I am Paul Holmgren, or whoever is the GM at this point, I would do whatever I could to make myself in position to draft Drouin.  He has potential to be that true first line forward that the Flyers need to play along side with Claude Giroux.
