Today, the Philadelphia Eagles upgraded their special teams by signing former Texans punter Doonie Jones and releasing punter Mat McBriar. Donnie Jones, who is a 32 year old veteran punter averaged 47.2 yards per punt with a net of 40.5 last year with the Houston Texans. Both of those numbers were Houston Texans records. The Eagles signed Jones to a one year deal and this is a solid pickup for them.
Last season, the Eagles special teams were horrible including punter Mat McBriar who was injured and was inconsistent. We all remember the Cowboys game at Lincoln Financial Field last season when he gave up a punt return to wide receiver Dwayne Harris which ultimately swung the momentum in the Cowboys favor. The Eagles do not need that this upcoming season so that is why Jones is a good pickup. He also brings some NFL History with him. Donnie Jones ranks fifth in NFL history in gross (45.6) and net punting (39.0) averages.
Jones can only help the Eagles and can hopefully bring some stability to the special teams because ever since Sav Rocca’s departure in 2010, the punting situation was has been adequate at best.
